This is a Linocut workshop located in Ubud, which is the artistic and cultural centre of Bali.
We stay at the Arma Resort in Ubud which is on the outskirts of the town centre just a short walk to the main street or the hotel provides a shuttle bus. The ARMA muesum/resort is a unique art centre, with art museum and gallery. The extraordinary gardens are designed to be a cultural landscape, a green oasis away from the bustling streets, with water gardens, sculptures and even a small rice field. The classes are in the museum lobby at ARMA which opens onto a water garden and has a gallery space.
By staying at the ARMA resort you are helping to fund the Arma Foundation which was created to promote and preserve Balinese culture, including traditional dance, visual arts and wood carving. As well as other cultural programs, it provides traditional informal classes for local children free of charge to preserve Bali’s beautiful artistic culture. By staying at the Arma Resort we are putting money back into Balinese arts. Read more about the Arma Foundation here.
During our stay there will be set class times as well as free time where you can either continue working on your linocuts (see itinerary), go sight-seeing or shopping. Classes are relaxed and friendly whilst also providing structure for you to learn linocut basics (for beginners) or take your linocut to the next level (for more advanced students).
In January it often rains around lunchtime for 2 hours this is why the itinerary has been designed to have lunch in the hotel and to be working on your linocut in the early afternoon. Often the sun comes out straight afterwards, although we cannot predict the weather.
On workshop days, after 4pm your time is your own. You can visit the Ubud market , go shopping in the main street, visit the monkey forest or continue working on your linocut. Eat at the Arma restaurant or take the free shuttle bus into Ubud for dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants.
There is also a free day with no structured classes, you can use this day as you wish. You can go on a tour, go sight seeing, or shopping, travel to another part of Bali, go on a bike riding tour. Do one of the Arma resorts classes in cooking or batik, or do a jewelry workshop in Ubud town at Chez Monique. Explore Ubud shops, continue with your art making or lie by the pool. Whatever you wish.
